What Are Chrysanthemums?
Chrysanthemums are the star of the fall garden. Made up of dozens of ray florets, these vibrant flowers are available in an array of colors including pink, orange, bronze, purple, red, and any mixture of those shades. The variety of mums available is almost endless and divided into twelve categories based on size and shape. Some are feathery, while others are shallow or deeply lobed. At Riverbend, we carry what are referred to as “hardy mums.” Unlike many of the flashier varieties, these plants are perennials and will return year after year if cared for properly.
When it comes to the cultivation of ornamental plants, chrysanthemums are one of the oldest out there. Experts estimate they were first grown and hybridized in China over 2500 years ago. The variety first brought to heel was of the perennial type and present in the Arctic, Russia, and Japan. Annual mums, meanwhile, hail from the dry fields and wastelands of the Mediterranean region.
Great for both landscaping and potting, mums can be utilized both indoors and out. This versatility is why they are second only to roses in popularity.
Selecting and Maintaining Your Mums in Kansas City
Follow the below tips to keep your chrysanthemums healthy and hearty all season long:
- Purchase and plant them in mid-September. This will help prevent the summer heat from wilting them. This will also give your mums roughly a month to bloom and grow.
- When shopping, look for a plant with more buds than open flowers. These will react better to repotting than a plant already in full bloom.
- Take the hose to your mums regularly. Their shallow root system quickly becomes dehydrated, especially in hot weather.
- Put a few inches of mulch down around your chrysanthemums to help them better retain moisture.
- When replanting your mums—outdoors or indoors—break up the root ball beforehand. This will make it easier for the plant to soak up nutrients.
- Place your mums in a sunny place. These colorful plants need at least four hours of sunshine to grow at their best.
- If planting in a garden, place your mums roughly 18 inches from any other plants. This will give their roots room to spread.
- Prune chrysanthemums to make the plant branch and bloom more profusely. Clip off about one inch of the branch tops, two to three times per growing season. Doing this any time after June can stunt your plant’s growth and should be avoided.
- Consider adding nutrient-rich compost or manure to your mums to bolster them against weather and disease.
- Once the first frost hits, remove the old foliage from the pot. New life will start at the roots and will only grow if it has a pathway to the top.
- Remove wilted blooms and dead stems as soon as you see them. This will help your chrysanthemums bloom longer.
- Divide mums when new growth appears in the spring. Mums grown as perennials will spread so you’ll need to thin them periodically.
- Taller varieties of mums may need to be staked when they’re full of blooms.
- Since mums can be toxic to cats, horses, and dogs, be sure to hang or plant these stunning flowers out of your animal’s reach.
